There are some other indications:
- What about the sticker behind the gear shift lever - is it missing (it would tell everything if still original)
- Radiator: If it is about as wide as the engine compartment (and there is no A/C), it is a 427 Bigblock car. If it is about 20cm shorter each side, it is a 327 smallblock.
- Flywheel size and starter bolt pattern: If the two starter bolts are diagonally arranged, it is a large 168 teeth flywheel and normally indicates the 11" clutch, used in Bigblocks mostly. With bolts side-by-side, it is a 153 teeth flywheel and smallblock 10,5" clutch
- Bigblocks hat stabilizers (sway bars) on the rear axle.
- Differential side yokes feature caps on 427 rather than U-bolts with nuts on 327's
- I believe 2,5" exhausts only came on 427 either (not quite sure on this one)
- Of course, the famous bigblock hood with fake air inlets

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Thomas

Hello alan,

Look at the hood because at BB hood has an airoutlet. When the hood has not a higher rise then it is a SB. Otherwise let us show some pics. ??

Hi

Zitat:What about the sticker behind the gear shift lever - is it missing (it would tell everything if still original)

Not correct, 68 had no sticker behind the shift leaver. Kopfschütteln

68 also did not have a door VIN sticker ( or how ever it's called ).

The only way to say for sure what it is comes from the build sheet ( tank sticker ).

Good luck. Gunther

There are three posibilities of block and six posibilities of HP:
blocknumber: 3935439 (430 - 435 hp)
blocknumber: 3916321 (390 - 400 hp)
blocknumber: 3914678 (300 - 350 hp)

Can you give me the intake manifold number, exhaust manifold number or carburator number. Then I can tell you which engine belongs in your corvette.

In 1968 there was no spec plate behind the lever.
68 featured the crossed flags in this position - year only option.....

Except the original build sheet / Tank sticker (left side of the fuel tank, just a little left and front of the filler opening) there is no proof of evidence of originality.

Have you checked the engine pad on the right hand front side of the engine? If the numbers embossed in there match the VIN partially you have the correct engine.

For finding evidence, the NCRS judging manual may provide plenty of hints to check for originality and unveil the positions to look for.

Alan asked what the original engine was in his car, so i think it was replaced sometime.
Otherwise he had posted the cast- and padnumbers ?

Photos of my engine won´t help - as said above - because in 1970 there were different (bigger huahua) ones used.
But I do have pics of it, Marco Großes Grinsen

Hi

There is one small chance left, but only, if your car was originally imported to Canada.
The Canadians kept a copy of the build sheet in their files and still have them, also for older C3.
Sadly, the USA cars never did, not the authorities, nor GM ?
I posted my car's VIN and unfortunately, it was not known in Canada. Kopfschütteln

Good luck. Günther
